Brief Summary of Unit:
Students will learn what a weather forecast is and how a forecast is made by the use of weather maps from the Datastreme site and the National Weather Service. Students will use a series of maps to graph temperatures and precipitation over a period of time. Through cooperative learning, the class will plan and produce a weather program video.

Students will Understand:
Students will demonstrate understanding and use a variety of processes for scientific investigations.
Students will collect, organize, and display data in a variety of forms.
Students will use statistical data about life situations to make predictions and justify reasoning.
Students will deliver presentations that describe a situation and establish connections between cause and effect.
Students will use precise, descriptive language when speaking.
Students will use visual aids and graphic representations to reinforce and supplement main ideas and information.
Students will use technology to locate, evaluate, and collect information from a variety of sources.



Essential Questions to Guide this Unit and Focus Teaching and Learning:
How do meterologists forecast weather?

Key Knowledge and Skills Students will Acquire:
Students will be able to use weather knowledge to make weather predictions for 3 to 7 days. They will understand weather terminology.

Learning Activities:
Use internet sites to find daily weather maps showing different weather information.
Use daily weather maps printed out earlier in the unit to make charts and graphs in excel to compare temperatures from Aberdeen, SD and a city of your choice in another region.
Use the printed maps to base weather predictions for Aberdeen, SD three days, five days, and seven days in the future. Draw a map and label it correctly.
Use cooperative learning to plan and present a five minute weather video.
