Students will read at increasing levels of complexity for various purposes.

SD Content Standard Indicators:
(Grades 3-5--designed for use with sp.ed.(resource) students):

Students will use various reading cues/strategies to interpret and comprehend text, e.g., context, semantic, syntactic, and graphophonic cues.

SD Content Standard Benchmarks:
--Use decoding and word recognition skills, e. g., suffixes, prefixes, vowel patterns, syllable breaks, word
families, sight words.
--Use knowledge of word parts to determine meaning of unknown or unfamiliar words within a passage, e.g.,
prefixes, suffixes, root words.
--Use knowledge of root words, prefixes, and suffixes to determine meaning of unknown words.
--Select appropriate context and semantic clues to construct meaning from text.
--Apply knowledge of word origins, derivations, and idioms to determine meaning of words and phrases.
--Demonstrate literal, interpretive, and/or critical comprehension by answering various how, why, and
what-if questions.

Brief Summary of Unit:
This unit incorporates phonics, word attack skills, use of context clues, and use of word origins to improve
a student's comprehension of assigned readings in various classes.

Students will Understand:
Understanding the role of decoding, word attack, context clues, and word origins in comprehending and
obtaining meaning from assigned readings in various subject areas.

Essential Questions to Guide this Unit and Focus Teaching and Learning:
--Why do people need to be able to read in today's society?
--What role does reading play in everyday life?
--Could a person live one week without doing any reading of any kind?

Key Knowledge and Skills Students will Acquire:
--Students will be able to apply phonetic skills to pronouncing unfamiliar words.
--Students will use context clues to understand the meaning of unfamiliar words in reading assignments.
--Students will use word attack skills to pronounce unfamiliar words.
--Students will study how word origins can contribute to the correct pronunciation and obtaining meaning
from unfamiliar words.

Assessment Plan:
Students will be assessed based on their ability to read passages orally from selected textbooks with no
(or very few) errors. Comprehension of the material read will be based on oral and/or written questions.

Learning Activities:
Students will be introduced to the unit through a powerpoint presentation. Activities will include worksheets, group activities, and individualized reading activities that include the use of phonics, word
attack skills, contextual clues, and word origins. All of these activities are directed at improving a
student's comprehension of assigned readings in various classes.

Notes:
This unit was designed to be used with special education students(resource) in 7th grade classes. Most of my students read below grade level so I chose my content standard indicators from grades 3-5.
